The concept

What is an AI kill switch?

A last resort for catastrophic risk.

An AI kill switch is a mechanism that allows an AI system to be throttled, suspended or shut down during an emergency. It is not an everyday off switch. Current proposals combine three elements: an emergency stop, remote override, and pre-set hard limits that can trigger shutdown automatically.

Key facts

Definition

Three pillars of control

Emergency stop

Halt an out-of-control system in seconds.

Remote override

Keep meaningful human control across distributed systems.

Hard limits

Pre-set conditions can automatically trigger shutdown.

Software layer

Revoke credentials, halt processes, disable model endpoints, and isolate networks.

Physical layer

Cut power or compute access at infrastructure level when software control is insufficient.

Implementation is starting to converge on a third element: verification. California's September 2026 executive order advances a frontier-model kill switch attested by independent verification organizations rather than by developers themselves, and folds loss-of-control events into its incident definitions.
